Retna: Black Magic

October 24, 2011

Speaking of black on black and ballin’, one of my fave artists El Mac’s great collaborators, Retna, using his heiroglyphic style calligraphy as a backdrop for Mac’s signature portrait murals, is releasing a new print in the following week titled “Black Magic”.  5 color hand pulled print at a giant 38.5″ x 55″, signed and numbered edition of 30.  How about a $6,500 art investment?  Dude is being slept on and blowing up quick.  Been a while since I’ve invested in art, but if I had $6,500 to drop within the next week, that means I could probably be closer to being engaged within that time instead.  I’d end up getting black on black eye from Linda.  Lmao.

reedpages: Mr. Cartoon

August 8, 2011

Sitting on my balcony this past Saturday with a companion named “Montecristo”, I was reading the first official issue of reedpages.  One of the featured articles is with Mr. Cartoon.  A Legend in the graffiti and tattoo industry, he talks about how he got into the creative game and why and how he continues to do what he does best.  Here are a few of my favorite quotes from the interview:

Change and the art of manifestation:

“I really began to change when I started helping people.  That is the only thing that has kinda kept my ego at bay… and when I say that, I believe my ego is edging God out.  You see, my ego is what separates you from me.  For me, [in terms of getting to know someone] it has always been like, You don’t get my pain or I’m better than you.  Instead of, What do we have in common?  or Maybe you can relate to this.  I didn’t have that kind of thinking so I had to de-program my brain from Why aren’t these people understanding?  Why isn’t this money coming?  Why are these motherfuckers bitin’ my shit? And turn it around to How can I be on the next page?  How can I go further?  How can I start something new?  How can I take something old and revamp it?  I had to turn the negative into the positive for everything.”

On Graffiti:

“It has absolutely nothing to do with money.  Painting graffiti, you have no money and no expectations for money.  I never thought I was going to have a clothing company… [graffiti] had nothing to do with my doing that.  And that’s what scares me about these youngsters today.  Are they going to have the right drive-not induced by money-with the availability of the internet?”

On Life:

“the important thing in the end was that I believed that I was a phenom.  So because I had that belief, I showed up.  Therefore, it happened for me.  Without that belief, there might not have been enough of anything to take me through that shit.  There are very few people who are considered phenoms like that.  A six-year-old Filipino girl sings like Mariah Carey, I can’t explain it.  That’s God’s intervention.  But for the rest of us, I had to work, man.  30 years.  Now I’m going to blast this Thai kid’s back out and people say I’m gifted (earlier he talked about a Thai kid flying in to get his entire back tattooed).  But I’ve been drawing for over 30 years, every day.  So if it wasn’t for that fucking PCP, I’d probably be even farther right now!  Man if I could hop in a time machine and give advice to myself, I’d say, “Shut up… shut up and listen.  Nobody ever learned anything when they were cocky.”  I would have told him, “Stick with me, do what I say and I’ll get you there without all the fucking punches in the face and sick shit.”  But would I, as an 18-year-old, have listened to [my advice]?  Probably not.”

Peep the digital copy on reedpages here or come by the house and read the actual copy.

ILL Session

July 14, 2011

One of my favorite stores/blogs, Turntable Lab’s Finest get down on an in store scratch session with some champs like Shiftee and Rafik.  Been a while since I’ve heard any double time cuts this dope since D-Styles and Toadstyle.  Soo good to see people that still care about cuttin’.  And if you’re just getting into DubStep and like it, it’s pretty much super beefed up and exaggerated scratch beats.  So if you like DubStep, I think you’d be able to tolerate scratch sessions like this.

Better Than Yours Mixshow

June 1, 2011

These guys were, and still are pretty much 757’s Creme de la Creme of Tablists.  They feature the OG DJ battle cats in VA Beach back in the days and are now uniting in BTYM with new skool DJs to make sure people don’t forget that there is way more to DJs than just pressing buttons and fist pumps.  Glad to see them keepin’ the art alive.  Peep out the roster and the live show every Tuesday night on some real live sh!t.

Thank you STAPLE!

4.25.11 “National Oldest Sibling Day”

April 25, 2011

I’m making today the official “1st Child/Oldest Sibling Day” to pay homage to all the oldest siblings for the following:

1. For all the extra time and energy they spend, that they could be spending on themselves, trying to pave the way, setting a positive example, looking out for, and worrying about their bastard younger siblings.

2. Being the learning experience for their parents to be parents…

3. then playing 3rd parent after anyway.

4. For being the mediator and vessel of their parents’ messages.

5. For looking like their parents’ accomplices in their “plot to ruin your younger siblings lives”.

6. For having it the worst growing up.

7. For watching their younger siblings get away with murder.

8. For not being selfish and even giving a fuck about their younger siblings that their younger siblings would never get anywhere else.

Salute to you, Oldest Sibling!

Your time and energy is well spent and invested into the greater good of your younger siblings that don’t give a damn about anything you tell them anyway.  It’s understood that you bear the extra pressure, stress and weight on your shoulder by being born into this role and because you care about your little siblings.

Stay up, Stay Strong!

A must listen if you’re an artist of any media, whether it be Music, Film, Design, etc., dig into your iTunes Store and look up the DIYOD podcast.  Start from episode 1 and work your way up.  Dope and moving dialogue and insight on creativity, the industry, marketing, networking, etc.  Alot you could relate to and learn from, agree or disagree on, it’s up to you.

Bottom line:

Do It Yourself Or Die

1st Fairey c/o Scalp

February 4, 2011

Homie and long time team mate at work B. Taylor aka Scalp, the first person I ever met on my official first day at work, surprised a hook up with a Shepard Fairey print as a token of appreciation after moving on from being teammates for years.  First one for me from OBEY.  Framing and hanging asap, perfect time since I was trying to figure out what to hang on the empty space above my turntables.  As my brother would say, “ShizDope!”.  Props and good look B!
