Soy Cuba

August 16, 2010

I remember seeing this movie in one of my Cult Film classes in VCU.  Since Netflix, I’ve been waiting on it to come out so that I could see it again.  I just need to go ahead and buy it.  Last night before passing out around midnight, I checked my new released streaming movies in Netflix via my Wii.  To my surprise, “I Am Cuba” was the last one listed and which is why I ended up passing out at 2:3o am.  This movie is a collection of four vignettes during Batista’s Cuba and beautifully dramatizes the need for revolution.  Shot in 1964 through the vision of Mikhail Kalatozov,  the movie’s cinematography was definitely ahead of it’s time and got the co-sign of Copolla and Scorsese; specially and specifically the many, mobile, one-take shots that have influenced many other similar shots in movies such as Goodfellas, Kill Bill, and many more; even Vanz’ Me and Mines video that I did with him walking into Plan 9.  The intro shots could have possibly influenced Hype Williams.  Who knows?  If anything, other than being inspirational with it’s cinematography, this movie is definitely a perfect role model of doing the best you can with what you have.  Shot in black and white, no HD, not even DV, the story and the images that support it are beautifully captured, which really grabs the audience’s attention until the end.   If you have my Neflix account, set a couple hours to the side one day, peep it out.  If not, open your own account, set a couple hours to the side one day, peep it out.

Fresh Frames: Vanz – Tobacco Packs Teaser

Happy Birthday G!  Good times!

Worth the wait.

August 13, 2010

Almost everyday I check to see if “El Mac” has posted anything new.  It’s been a long while since I made a post about his “Persephone” piece as well as Mac posting anything new himself.  But now I realize why he hasn’t been posting anything for a while, he’s been all around the world creating content to post about.  This dude is just ill with the aerosol precision.  Definitely damn well worth the wait.  Peep his new murals around the world at http://mac-arte.blogspot.com/

RE: Fresh Frames: Genesis – I Just Wanna Be A Writer (Note to Pharrell)

August 4, 2010

Wow!  I just learned some good news from Genesis that his/our video made it up on the front page of CreativeControl.tv!  A site promoting artists that have full “Creative Control” over their work.  Creative Control is led by directors Coodie & Chike and media mogul Dame Dash.   Some director credit would’ve been nice at least since they put their watermarks on it from beginning to end.  I guess anonymous we remain.  But congrats and good luck to Genesis!

After all these posts, I almost forgot, you could download his mixtape “Grey Skies” here: http://usershare.net/j49f7xetzg0y

Fulfilling Presidents’ Requests

August 2, 2010

A few months ago, on a random Thursday afternoon, our Singles team got an email from my day-job company CustomInk.com’s President that his brother stumbled upon what might be an interesting challenge for our team and the company.   Remember when VP Biden was over heard live on the microphone after a speech telling  President Obama that Health Care was a “Big f#*king deal.”?  The article below is what our President Marc Katz’ brother found which highlights an idea that the President of the United States jokingly had after the event.

Upon reading the email, our team quickly turned the Presidents’ requests  into reality.  My hand in the process was to quickly whip up a design that plays on VP Biden’s take on Health Care.  Nothing too serious on the graphic design aspect, just something simple and quirky.  We created shirts for the President, the VP, and the First Lady, overnighted it to the White House and hoped for the best.

Months later, we got a letter from the White House expressing their gratitude for our gift signed by the President and the First Lady.  It was a nice unexpected surprise for the team.  We hope he likes it and hope to see him wear it someday.
